Dr. Cornel West’s Campaign Doubles Signature Requirement for Minnesota Ballot Access
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Saint Paul, Minnesota] – The Cornel West for President Campaign announces that it has surpassed twice the required signature threshold for ballot access in Minnesota. This achievement not only secures Dr. Cornel West's place on the ballot but also reflects the strong grassroots support for his transformative vision. Minnesota, the home state of Vice President Tim Walz, plays a critical role in the upcoming presidential election.
"Our success in Minnesota is a strong endorsement of our vision for America—a vision that champions truth, justice and love," said Dr. Cornel West. "We are heartened by the overwhelming support from Minnesotans who are ready for a profound shift in the country’s political discourse."
The significant surplus in signatures not only highlights the dedication of the campaign's volunteers but also positions Dr. West and Dr. Abdullah as formidable contenders in a state known for its progressive politics. "In the shadow of the George Floyd uprisings, the overwhelming response to our campaign by Minnesota voters is an indicator that people still want transformative change," added vice presidential candidate Dr. Melina Abdullah.
Nick Shillingford, the lead volunteer in Minnesota, expressed his enthusiasm: "People, and young people specifically, are very excited to have someone they can vote FOR rather than just someone they feel they have to vote against. I asked a woman who was jogging with her earbuds in to sign the petition and for a brief moment I was afraid she was going to be upset that I was interrupting her jog. But while I was explaining the campaign she said "I love Cornel West, I'll sign anything for Cornel West" and she began signing. Minnesota is a state that has a huge community that cares about justice, human rights and the environment so the West campaign is a natural fit in this state.”
The campaign's success in Minnesota is part of a broader strategy to engage deeply with issues that resonate with Americans, including abolishing poverty and homelessness, racial justice, and environmental sustainability. The West/Abdullah platform offers an alternative to the policies championed by the major party candidates, aiming to transform the political dialogue and bring real solutions to the poor and working class.
The West/Abdullah campaign has the signatures and minor party nominations it needs to get on the ballot in 18 states. This includes 7 of the battleground states: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Minnesota, Florida, Wisconsin and North Carolina. For more info, see our ballot access map.

Dr. Cornel West's Campaign Engages in Michigan Ballot Legal Battle
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, August 20, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Lansing, Michigan] – Today, the campaign of Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Melina Abdullah announced its decision to intervene in a legal challenge initiated by the Michigan Democratic Party. The lawsuit questions the inclusion of Dr. West and Dr. Abdullah on the Michigan ballot, citing procedural concerns.
The campaign issued the following statement: "This lawsuit, focused on minor procedural details such as notarization, represents a legal tactic aimed to distract from the essential policy debates. Initiated by the DNC and the Michigan Democratic Party, its purpose is clear: to suppress the progressive voices challenging the current administration’s policies, including its support of a genocide in Gaza.”
Dr. Cornel West added, "Our campaign, supported by progressive state parties nationwide, embodies a commitment to deep systemic change. We are ready to battle it out in court to defend the voices of poor and working class people, ensuring our place on the ballot."
Dr. Melina Abdullah also commented, "The overwhelming support we have received, particularly from Michigan voters, highlights the urgent need for candidates who speak to real issues like ending the genocide in Gaza and providing workers with a livable wage here. We will not be silenced by baseless legal maneuvers intended to disrupt our movement."
Campaign spokesperson Edwin DeJesus stated, "The West/Abdullah campaign is actively intervening in this case to vigorously contest these baseless accusations. We are confident that a thorough examination in court will expose these legal maneuvers as unfounded attempts to curb the growing progressive movement. The campaign remains committed to defending its position and continuing the fight for a political revolution that addresses the rights and needs of all people.”
Elh Shine, a lead Michigan volunteer, expressed the significance of this legal challenge: "We intend to represent the voices of all the individuals who signed ballot access petitions in good faith believing their signature would be honored by the state. This legal battle is about the worth of each individual voter in the state of Michigan and whether they matter to the state."

Dr. Cornel West Secures Ballot Access in Washington State with Justice For All Party
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, August 16, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Olympia, Washington] – The West/Abdullah campaign announces that the Justice For All Party (JFA) has successfully secured a spot on the Washington State ballot for the 2024 presidential election. This significant achievement comes through the tireless efforts of dedicated volunteers and strong community support.
"Securing a place on the ballot in Washington is not just a victory for this campaign but a victory for democracy," stated Dr. Cornel West, independent presidential candidate nominated by the Justice For All Party. "This enables the campaign to address critical issues facing Washington—from environmental challenges and economic disparities to championing social justice."
Lead volunteers CJ Tonnes, Ashton Beavers, and Laura Fielding led the signature collection efforts, demonstrating the community’s enthusiasm for significant political change and empowerment. "The conversations on the ground show a profound commitment to our collective future," remarked CJ Tonnes.
This victory for JFA not only impacts this election but also establishes a lasting legacy, ensuring ballot access in future election cycles - including local and state elections - thus contributing to a more diverse and representative political discourse in Washington and beyond.
Laura Fielding discussed the impact of ballot access on the party's ability to support the community: "Furthermore, ballot access enhances the JFA’s capacity for fundraising for mutual aid efforts and community support initiatives. With this achievement, the campaign can amplify efforts to provide tangible aid and support to local communities, reinforcing the commitment to serve and uplift every citizen." As the 2024 presidential election approaches, the West/Abdullah campaign is more motivated than ever to promote a platform of justice, equity, and community support.
The West/Abdullah campaign has the signatures and minor party nominations it needs to get on the ballot in 17 states. This includes 7 of the battleground states: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Minnesota, Florida, Wisconsin and North Carolina. For more info, see our ballot access map.
About the Justice for All Party
In an effort to directly confront the suppression of voter choice and participation by legacy political parties, Independent candidate for President of the United States, Dr. Cornel West, announced the establishment of the Justice For All Party (JFA). The party will primarily be utilized as a grassroots, people-powered vehicle to secure ballot access in specific states. Additionally, JFA will grow into a larger formation that galvanizes people-powered initiatives to promote transformational change beyond the 2024 election cycle. JFA provides a mechanism for our grassroots campaign to travel a path of least resistance that will require the fewest number of signatures to attain ballot access in states like California, North Carolina, Washington and the District of Columbia.

Justice For All Party Triumphs in Court, Secures Place on North Carolina Ballot
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, August 13, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Raleigh, North Carolina] – In a landmark victory for democracy, the Justice For All Party (JFA) has successfully challenged the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) and secured its rightful place on the 2024 general election ballot. This triumph not only signifies a win for JFA but also sets a powerful precedent for all future third-party candidates in North Carolina.
The United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina ruled in favor of JFA, highlighting that the Board’s refusal to certify the party despite it meeting all legal signature requirements was a violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments. This decision affirms the fundamental rights of voters to associate freely and ensures their voices are heard through the candidates they wish to support.
"This is a monumental day for our party and for all supporters of a diverse political representation," stated Italo Medelius, co-chair for the state JFA party. "The court's decision to allow our candidates on the ballot is not just a win for JFA but a victory for every North Carolinian who believes in the power of choice and the strength of democracy."
The court also issued an injunction against the NCSBE, instructing them not to enforce the standard candidate nomination deadlines against JFA. This measure ensures that JFA’s candidates will appear on the ballot, maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and supporting democratic principles. "We fought hard against what we perceived as an unjust barrier to our participation in the democratic process, set by a partisan board. Today, we celebrate not only our victory but the preservation of democracy," added Medelius.
This ruling is particularly significant as it paves the way for future third-party and independent candidates running for office in North Carolina, ensuring that the electoral system is fair and equitable. Campaigns will be able to reference this lawsuit if the NCSBE attempts to violate their freedom of speech through ballot access. It is one of the many legacies of this campaign.
The West/Abdullah campaign extends its deepest gratitude to the volunteers and countless supporters who have stood by the party throughout this legal battle. In addition, a special thanks to Oliver Hall and his team at the Center for Competitive Democracy, who took the lead on litigating this case. Recognized as the best election law litigator in the country today, the People of North Carolina were indeed fortunate to have Hall leading this fight. Looking ahead, JFA is more motivated than ever and is gearing up for a vigorous campaign leading up to the 2024 general election. "We are excited to bring our platform to the voters and engage in meaningful discussions about the future of our state and country," concluded Dr. West.
The West/Abdullah campaign has the signatures and minor party nominations it needs to get on the ballot in 16 states. This includes 7 of the battleground states: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Minnesota, Florida, Wisconsin and North Carolina. For more info, see our ballot access map.

Dr. Cornel West's Campaign Responds to Petition Challenge in Maine
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, August 12, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Augusta, Maine] – The West/Abdullah presidential campaign has responded to recent challenges to its nomination petition in Maine, emphasizing the state's certification of the petition following a comprehensive and rigorous review by the Maine Board of Elections.
The state of Maine certified Dr. West's petition, confirming 4,978 valid signatures, exceeding the threshold necessary for a non-party candidate. This certification followed a meticulous verification process that included a line-by-line assessment of each signature, ensuring all legal standards were met. "The challenge against our petition is baseless and appears driven by partisan interests aiming to restrict voter choice," said campaign spokesperson Edwin DeJesus. "The Maine Board of Elections' thorough process has already addressed and rectified any discrepancies, validating our signatures well beyond the necessary count."
Allegations of fraudulent tactics and claims of unregistered voters in the petition were also addressed, highlighting the grassroots nature of a campaign fueled by everyday people looking to bring about change in what they see as a broken electoral system. Maine's verification procedures are rigorous, ensuring that all signatures counted are compliant with state laws. Claims that many of the verified signatures were from unregistered voters are unfounded, as each signature's registration status was meticulously checked by state officials.
"This is not just an attack on our campaign but an affront to Maine's democratic processes, which include ranked-choice voting—a system the major parties have continually resisted," added DeJesus. "Ranked-choice voting is favorable in a democracy because it ensures that more voices are represented in the electoral process, allowing voters to rank candidates by preference. This system helps to ensure that the winning candidate has broad support."
The West/Abdullah campaign is focused on issues important to Maine voters, including healthcare, the environment, and the economy. The campaign aims to ensure access to affordable, high-quality healthcare for all Mainers, protect the state’s natural beauty and resources through sustainable policies, and support economic growth by creating good-paying jobs and helping small businesses thrive.
To date, the West/Abdullah campaign has secured ballot access in Wisconsin, Maine, Florida, Mississippi, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Colorado, South Carolina, Utah, Oregon, Alaska and Vermont, pending finalization of certification in certain states.

Dr. Cornel West’s Campaign Exceeds Signature Requirement for Wisconsin Ballot Access
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, August 9, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Madison, WI] – The West/Abdullah presidential campaign proudly announces that it has significantly exceeded the required signature threshold for ballot access in Wisconsin, solidifying Dr. Cornel West's position in the upcoming presidential election. This achievement highlights the strong grassroots support for Dr. West's transformative vision in one of the nation's most closely watched battleground states.
"In a state where the latest trends show a tight race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, our successful signature drive in Wisconsin is a clear indicator of the people's desire for an alternative voice in this critical election," said Dr. Cornel West. "We are energized by the enthusiasm and dedication of our volunteers and supporters who believe in our mission to fight for truth, justice, and love.
Dr. Melina Abdullah, the vice presidential candidate on the West ticket, commented on the achievement: "Wisconsin's overwhelming response to our campaign is heartening and speaks volumes about the collective yearning for a vision and policies that uplift and empower the people. During a time when the promise of democracy seems limited, Dr. West and I seek to expand the choices offered, abandoning the ‘lesser of two evils’ approach advanced by the corporate duopoly.”
Colin Madison, a volunteer petitioner and Love Warrior in Wisconsin, shared his perspective: "I think Wisconsinites see our campaign as setting itself apart by not being a 'lesser of two evils' (that American citizens are so used to), but instead a true 'force for good' in our broken, corrupt, and big-money-aligned political system."
The West/Abdullah ticket promises to engage deeply with issues that resonate with Wisconsinites, including economic transformation, racial justice, and environmental sustainability, setting a sharp contrast to the policies championed by the major party candidates.
To date, the West/Abdullah campaign has secured ballot access in Wisconsin, Maine, Florida, Mississippi, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Colorado, South Carolina, Utah, Oregon, Alaska and Vermont, pending finalization of certification in certain states.

Dr. Cornel West's Campaign Joins Lawsuit Against North Carolina Board of Elections
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, August 2, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Raleigh, North Carolina] – In light of recent discoveries during the House Oversight and Reform Committee hearings of the North Carolina General Assembly, the campaign of Dr. Cornel West will join a new, separate lawsuit initiated by an independent group of North Carolina voters. This decision follows the revelation that the North Carolina Board of Elections received undue influence from the Democratic Party and their allies, resulting in significant procedural failures during the signature verification process for the Justice for All Party's ballot access efforts.
During the House Oversight and Reform Committee hearings last week, it was disclosed that the Board of Elections in North Carolina was called before the legislature and rigorously questioned due to their mistreatment of the Justice for All Party, which was founded by presidential hopeful Dr. Cornel West. Allegations were made by Democrat operatives claiming that out of North Carolina's 100 counties, 78 had failed to check signatures on petitions at the county level before sending them to the state. However, the state's investigation revealed that only four counties had not properly checked the signatures or could not confirm that they had done so.
"The discrepancy between the alleged number of 78 counties, and actual number of counties in violation - four - highlights the baseless nature of the accusations. The claim that three-quarters of the counties failed to verify signatures is demonstrably false. The weakness of these accusations is evident and underscores the lack of a substantial case against us. While these allegations are frustrating, they are ultimately encouraging as they reflect the desperate attempts to undermine our efforts," said West campaign spokesperson Edwin DeJesus.
This situation is further compounded by the historical context provided by the Democratic National Committee's ongoing efforts to impede third-party and independent candidates. According to NBC News’ March 14, 2024 article - Democrats Prepare to Go to War Against Third-Party Candidates, the DNC promised to create a task force specifically aimed at obstructing the ballot access of third-party candidates. This is exemplified by their hiring of Lis Smith and her firm, whose primary focus is to find ways to prevent third-party and independent candidates from gaining access to the ballot, thus disregarding the people's voice and upholding the two-party system.
The impact of these actions is not only procedural but deeply personal. Frankie Gist, a candidate for Mayor running under the Justice for All Party, has been unable to move forward in his campaign due to the actions of the Board of Elections. Frankie Gist stated, "My dad always told me growing up, 'In order to get something you've never had, you have to do something you've never done.' But he also said when you start doing things differently and not like the way others want it done, they will try to do everything in their power to hinder you from moving forward to your greatness and success. The Board of Elections is trying to hinder us because they see we’re doing things differently and not like the way they want us to do it. But as my grandmother used to say all the time, 'We won't be moved!' Nothing they do will stop us from winning this ballot and winning the election. We must continue to fight and work together to make change happen for all people."
Dr. Cornel West emphasized, "Our campaign stands in solidarity with the Justice for All Party and all those who seek justice and truth in the electoral process. We are committed to ensuring that every voice is heard and that our place on the ballot is secured. As we join this lawsuit, we remain focused on fighting for truth, justice, and love."
To date, the West/Abdullah campaign has secured ballot access in Wisconsin, Maine, Florida, Mississippi, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Colorado, South Carolina, Utah, Oregon, Alaska and Vermont, pending finalization of certification in certain states.
JFA provides a mechanism for our grassroots campaign to travel a path of least resistance that will require the fewest number of signatures to attain ballot access in states like California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, New Mexico, North Carolina, Washington and the District of Columbia.

West asserts that running as an Independent candidate affords him the opportunity and duty to deliver policy prescriptions incorporated by and for the people, instead of political parties beholden to corporations and special interest groups who feel no solidarity with poor and working-class people of all races, gender identities, and age groups.
The Cornel West Campaign to empower poor and working people everywhere stands at a pivotal moment in history, committed to being a true campaign for people around the globe. Our aim is and will always be to unite in solidarity with movements of truth and justice, who seek a choice beyond empire, white supremacy, capitalism, patriarchy, and the confines of the corporate-dominated two-party system.

Dr. Cornel West’s Presidential Campaign Condemns Supreme Court Decision, Calls for National Commitment to Economic Justice and Housing Rights
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, July 26, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Washington, D.C.] – In a recent Supreme Court decision that undermines the very fabric of social justice, the rights of the unhoused have been severely compromised, allowing for the criminalization of homelessness when no adequate shelter options are available. Dr. Cornel West, a lifelong advocate for economic justice and a presidential candidate, strongly condemns this ruling as a grave injustice that highlights the need for systemic change in how we view and treat poverty and homelessness in America.
The ruling, City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, effectively strips away the minimal safeguards that protected individuals from being punished for sleeping outdoors when no emergency shelter options were available. This decision not only contradicts basic human decency but also reveals a deep flaw in our commitment to economic justice.
"Our campaign is rooted in the belief that economic justice is the cornerstone of a moral society. This decision by the Supreme Court is a clear indication that our work is far from over," Dr. West stated. "It is not enough to offer temporary shelters or short-term solutions. We need a transformative approach that ensures permanent and secure housing for all."
In light of this ruling, Dr. West’s economic justice platform calls for a comprehensive national housing strategy that includes:
- Expansion of Affordable Housing: Massively increase the availability of affordable, safe, and dignified housing to ensure that no American is left without a home.
- Healthcare and Mental Health Services: Provide accessible health services, including mental health and substance abuse treatments, to address the underlying issues contributing to homelessness.
- Economic Reforms: Implement policy changes that redistribute wealth, improve access to quality education, and ensure that all Americans have the economic means to live with dignity.
"Our vision of economic justice is one where every individual’s divine worth is recognized and honored. This includes our brothers and sisters who are homeless," said Melina Abdullah, Dr. West's running mate. "To abolish homelessness, we must do more than remove people from the streets; we must provide a sanctuary that they can call home, equipped with the support and services needed to heal and thrive."
The Vermont Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party, which has nominated Dr. West in Vermont, expressed strong support for this platform. "The recent 6-3 conservative decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson is an infuriating example of the anti-democratic trend from the highest court," a representative stated. "Homelessness is not a choice; it's a byproduct of an economic system designed to create winners and losers. This decision perpetuates a long-standing American tradition of exploiting the vulnerable, tracing back to the Black Codes and the era of Jim Crow. Providing housing, not punishment, is the ethical, moral, and practical solution."
Adding to the urgency, the recent directive from Governor Gavin Newsom in California, following the Supreme Court decision, to remove homeless encampments marks a significant and troubling step by a state leadership. This order, as the nation's most sweeping response to the Supreme Court's ruling, demonstrates the vital need for federal guidelines that protect, rather than punish, our unhoused citizens.
We strongly encourage all Americans to review the 100-day plan at www.CornelWest2024.com/100_days, which makes economic justice a top priority. Call your local representative and voice your dissent against the City of Grants Pass v. Johnson decision, and donate to our movement at www.CornelWest2024.com/donate so that we can continue to fight for the poor and working class. "I will not move into the White House until everyone in this country has a place to live," Dr. West emphasized, highlighting the urgency of the housing crisis as a national priority.
To date, the West/Abdullah campaign has secured ballot access in Florida, Mississippi, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Colorado, South Carolina, Utah, Oregon, Alaska, and Vermont, pending finalization of certification in certain states.

Dr. Cornel West's Campaign Seeks Equal Secret Service Protection in Wake of Political Violence
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, July 17, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Newington, Virginia] – In the wake of the recent attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump, Dr. Cornel West's presidential campaign has formally requested Secret Service protection. This plea underscores the urgent need for equitable safety measures for all presidential candidates, regardless of their political affiliations or the criticisms they may voice.
Dr. West has consistently voiced critical opinions on U.S. policies, especially those concerning Israel and Zionist ideologies, setting him apart from other prominent candidates like former President Donald J. Trump, President Joseph R. Biden Jr., and Mr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. These positions have subjected Dr. West to intense scrutiny and hostile portrayals by some media outlets, emphasizing the need for consistent and unbiased protection.
In compliance with procedural guidelines provided by the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Secret Service, Dr. West's campaign has approached Congresswoman Katie Porter, Dr. West's local congressional representative. This step ensures that the request is submitted through the proper legislative channels, a standard protocol to guarantee formal and correct handling of such significant matters.
“While we follow the required processes, we also directly urge President Biden to uphold the principles of democracy and fairness in the distribution of Secret Service protection,” stated Edwin DeJesus, spokesperson for Dr. West’s campaign. “It is imperative that all presidential candidates receive equal treatment under the law, ensuring their safety as they engage with the public on critical national issues.”
The campaign stresses that the protection of presidential candidates should transcend partisanship, focusing on the integrity of the electoral process and the democratic rights of candidates to openly discuss sensitive and diverse topics.
“We call upon President Biden and the relevant authorities to act now in addressing this significant disparity and affirm their commitment to the safety and security of all candidates, which is foundational to a free and fair electoral process,” added DeJesus.
To date, the West/Abdullah campaign has secured ballot access in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Colorado, South Carolina, Utah, Oregon, Alaska, and Vermont, pending finalization of certification in certain states.
