Alito's Ruling Cannot Silence Pennsylvania Voters: Write-In Cornel West, and Your Vote WILL Count
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Washington, D.C.] – Yesterday, the Supreme Court's decision to reject Dr. Cornel West's request for ballot access in Pennsylvania has stirred a nationwide conversation on democracy and voter rights. Justice Samuel Alito's ruling comes despite Dr. West's clear path forward and Pennsylvania voters' undeniable right to choose an alternative to the two major parties. Make no mistake: Pennsylvanians can write in "Cornel West" for President, and their vote will count.
In a year marked by challenges to ballot access, this decision underscores why our campaign fights tirelessly for the voice of the people. West's campaign offers a true alternative for those disillusioned by candidates aligned with big-money interests, military-industrial ties, and corporate influence. The ruling today highlights the very barriers we seek to dismantle to ensure democracy remains accessible for all Americans.
"Pennsylvania, don't settle for the 'lesser of two evils,'" Dr. West urged. "With a write-in for Cornel West, you're not just casting a vote—you're making a statement against a political system that silences third-party voices and preserves the status quo. Vote your conscience, and let's show that our voices cannot be dismissed." Dr. West added, "If you decide to cast an anti-fascist vote for the war criminal Harris, I do not demonize you - I simply disagree!"
Edwin DeJesus, spokesperson for the West/Abdullah campaign, addressed the broader implications of the decision, stating, "While the focus often falls on foreign election interference, it pales in comparison to what we're witnessing in our own courtrooms. Justice Alito, appointed by former President George W. Bush—whose administration perpetuated war crimes—represents a federal judiciary increasingly co-opted by corporate and institutional power. This is precisely why we need reform to keep our democracy accountable and in the hands of the people."
The West/Abdullah campaign remains committed to offering a meaningful choice in this election. With a presence across battleground states like Michigan, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, our campaign is a powerful reminder of the growing movement toward a more inclusive, representative democracy. Pennsylvanians now have the power to amplify that movement by writing in “Cornel West” and sending a clear message that their voice will not be ignored.
The West/Abdullah campaign has the signatures and minor party nominations it needs to get on the ballot in 16 states. This includes 6 of the battleground states: Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia and North Carolina. For details on where Dr. West and Dr. Abdullah will appear on the ballot across the United States, please see our campaign's ballot access map.
How to Write In Cornel West

Dr. Cornel West’s Campaign to Appeal Judge’s Decision Blocking West/Abdullah from Pennsylvania Ballot
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, October 14, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania] – In a deeply disappointing and undemocratic ruling, the Pennsylvania federal court has blocked Dr. Cornel West from appearing on the state’s 2024 presidential ballot. This decision, issued late on Friday, deals a severe blow to voters seeking real choice in one of the most critical battleground states of the election.
The judge’s order itself acknowledged the troubling nature of the state's actions:
"This Court has serious concerns with the Secretary’s application of the election code’s restrictions to Dr. West. The laws, as applied to him and based on the record before the Court, appear to be designed to restrict ballot access to him (and other non-major political candidates) for reasons that are not entirely weighty or tailored, and thus appear to run afoul of the U.S. Constitution" - J. Nicholas Ranjan
The West/Abdullah 2024 campaign remains undeterred and is actively appealing this ruling with a renewed commitment to ensuring that all voters—especially those supporting independent candidates—are given equal access and representation. If successful, this appeal could set a precedent for all future independent presidential candidates who face similarly unfair challenges due to elector paperwork technicalities.
"This decision is not just about me—it’s about democracy itself. Blocking independent candidates from the ballot undermines the voice of the people and perpetuates an unjust system. We are appealing this ruling because every voter deserves a real choice, and no candidate should be silenced by bureaucratic barriers," said Dr. Cornel West. He added, "We must bear witness beyond Trump’s neo-fascism leading toward Civil War II and Harris’s multicultural militarism that enables genocide leading toward World War III!"
During the hearing, Jonathan Marks, the Deputy Secretary for Elections & Commissions, confirmed multiple times that "it would not be impossible to reprint ballots" in Pennsylvania. This acknowledgment further reinforces that the decision to block Dr. West is not only unjust but avoidable. The campaign firmly believes that no candidate should be excluded from the ballot due to bureaucratic hurdles, especially when the remedy is entirely feasible.
"This ruling is a direct assault on voter choice and the democratic process. We’re appealing because the stakes couldn’t be higher—not just for Dr. West, but for every future independent candidate. Pennsylvania voters deserve to have all options on the ballot," said Edwin DeJesus, spokesperson for the campaign. "This fight is bigger than a single election—we are fighting to ensure a truly democratic process where all voices are heard and all candidates, regardless of party, have a fair chance to compete. The implications of this appeal extend far beyond Pennsylvania and will affect the future of independent candidates nationwide. The West/Abdullah campaign calls on all supporters to spread our message of truth, justice, and love on social media as we continue this battle for fairness and justice and urge the U.S. Court of Appeals to correct this egregious ruling."
The West/Abdullah campaign has the signatures and minor party nominations it needs to get on the ballot in 16 states. This includes 6 of the battleground states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Minnesota, Virginia and North Carolina. Dr. Cornel West’s Campaign Moves to Federal Court Following Pennsylvania Supreme Court Decision
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, September 18, 2024
Cornel West for President
[email protected]
[Harrisburg, Pennsylvania] – In light of the recent Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling against its presidential electors, the West/Abdullah campaign has moved the case to federal court, where the constitutional issues, particularly surrounding First Amendment rights, will receive more thorough scrutiny.
The West/Abdullah 2024 campaign is disappointed but not surprised by the Democratic Party's ongoing efforts to block ballot access. "These actions are part of a broader strategy to undermine alternative voices and suppress competition within the political system," said campaign spokesperson Edwin DeJesus.
"It's important to note that if Pennsylvania proceeds with printing ballots without Dr. West's name, the court has the authority to order a reprint to include him. Similar rulings have been made in other states, and we remain hopeful that a just outcome will prevail," added DeJesus. "By leveraging their resources to challenge legitimate campaigns like ours in court, the Democrats are demonstrating that they are more interested in maintaining power than allowing voters the freedom to choose from a diverse field of candidates."
"These unconstitutional tactics, aimed at stifling democracy, are nothing new. Rather than embracing debate and a diversity of thought, the Democrats are employing procedural barriers and legal challenges to silence voices that offer real solutions to the problems everyday Americans face," said Dr. Cornel West. The campaign remains committed to fighting back and ensuring voters have the choice they deserve, despite the Democrats' continued efforts to limit ballot access and control the political narrative.
The West/Abdullah campaign has the signatures and minor party nominations it needs to get on the ballot in 17 states. This includes 6 of the battleground states: Michigan, Georgia, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia and North Carolina. For details on where Dr. West and Dr. Abdullah will appear on the ballot across the United States, please see our campaign’s ballot access map.
